Career and Job Information in Biology
All of the following web sites are excellent places to investigate
employment and internship opportunities, graduate school possibilities and
career options. You should patiently explore each...it often requires some
creative searching to find the information you want. Use the Search
options, but try different key words because topics may be indexed in many
ways (e.g. employment, jobs, internships, opportunities etc.)
Keep an eye on the bulletin board in SM 247. Appropriate job postings will be placed here whenever they appear.
- Why should I become a Biologist? The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology has compiled a informative FAQ on careers directions and opportunities in Biology.

The Animal Behavior Society. Includes a guide to graduate programs in
animal behavior (under resources), the newsletter (includes adverts. for
jobs and graduate fellowships), links to university biology departments and
the archive of ABSnet, a listerv of behavior-oriented announcements
(includes adverts. for jobs and graduate fellowships).

The Ecological Society of America. News and plenty more about every topic
in ecology. Job announcements and fellowship opportunities (see Job
Announcements under News). Most jobs are professional level. Career advice too (Education/Outreach under
Public Affairs).
- Environmental Careers World. Career ideas and job information. Check under Job Bank for a listing of openings.
- Environmental Careers Organisation has a list that focuses on paid internships.
- E-jobs provides a large set of listings and links to environmental jobs, most in academia or for people with a masters or doctorate. However, careful sorting through this large site may give you the job you want.
- American Society of Limnology and Oceanography has a job list, but mostly oriented towards professionals and grad students.
- American Fisheries Society maintains a jobs bulletin that occasionally has temporary and seasonal work listed in addition to professional positions.
- The Biology Department of Iowa State University. Information on careers in biology and links to other job sites can be found here.
- College of Natural Resources Career Office at Colorado State University has a very large list of links to external job sites that relate to biology.
- Forestry and Environmental Studies Career Development Office at Yale University has a very large list of web sites that offer job listings and career development ideas.

International Center for Tropical Biology at the University of Missouri at
Saint Louis. Information on current topics in tropical conservation
biology, includes links to other major organizations concerned with
tropical ecology (e.g. Organization of Tropical Studies, Smithsonian
Institution).
- The Marine and Environmental Biology Job Site has information on how to apply for jobs and hints for where to look for jobs.

The Nature Conservancy. A listing of professional employment opportunities and volunteer positions within the Nature Conservancy organization. You may search by region to narrow your objectives.

The Ornithological Council. Lots of bird-oriented job opportunities and
graduate fellowships listed in the Ornithological Newsletter. Seasonal and temporary positions are also listed, so this a very good spot to look for those summer activities.

Society for Conservation Biology. A good source to begin a search for
conservation-related employment or information on programs in conservation
biology.
- Student Conservation Association is a good place to find volunteer or small stipend jobs. These positions represent many fields of biology and are in many locations. The experiences can be of great value for later jobs or career directions.
- Texas A&M maintains a nice list of employment opportunities in Wildlife and Fisheries. The list includes temporary and seasonal positions, graduate student opportunities and academic positions.
- Wave Communications. This is a local Park County Internet provider. Look at their list of Big Horn Basin companies under "Local Links". You will find many dude ranches and other such employers. Read about these companies before you talk with them and you'll sound especially interesting!
Government Sites
- USA Jobs is the US Government's comprehensive list of jobs, including those in biology and other sciences.
- U.S. Geological Survey includes jobs in biology and other sciences.
- U.S. Dept. of the Interior has a job search availability that covers positions in the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the US Geological Survey. You can search via state, GS level or other keyword. You might try phrases like "Biological Technician" or "Biologist".

The Environmental Protection Agency. Advertises many internships that are
reserved exclusively for recent college graduates and also posts
advertisements for jobs at many environmentally-oriented government
agencies.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service. Lists employment and volunteer
opportunities plus information on careers.

California Department of Fish and Game. Obviously you would not be spending your summers in Wyoming if you find a job here.
